Come join us at your local parks and green spaces for our 10th annual Geoheritage Day! You will have the chance to learn how geological processes have shaped the regional landscape, given us a glimpse into past environments and life forms and provided resources for our use. Volunteers from Carleton University’s Department of Earth Sciences and the Ottawa-Gatineau Geoheritage Project will be on hand to explain what there is to see and how each site fits into the local geological history.

Come out and spend the day with some remarkable rocks, minerals and fossils!

The full list of this year’s sites includes:

  • Champlain Bridge Stromatolites, Gatineau

  • Cardinal Creek Karst, Orleans

  • Mer Bleue Bog, Orleans

  • Hog’s Back Park, Ottawa

  • Pinhey Sand Dunes, Nepean

  • Carleton University Earth Sciences Sample Preparation Laboratory, Carleton University

  • Campus (where you can bring a rock to be cut and find help to identify it)

Geoheritage Day is a joint effort of Carleton University’s Department of Earth Sciences and the Ottawa-Gatineau Geoheritage Project, along with our partners at Cardinal Creek Community Association and the Biodiversity Conservancy. This annual event is designed to introduce the public to some of our local geowonders. The day is powered entirely by enthusiastic volunteers including geoscientists, university students and geoscience retirees stationed at various sites across the National Capital Region between 10am and 3pm.

Below is an aerial view of a part of a remarkable exposure of Ordovician stromatolites, which you can come visit this year, and chat with our site host, OGGP Chair Allan Donaldson.
